Vigo County Historical Society Releases Local History Lesson Plan

PRESS RELEASE VIGO COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY & MUSEUM
April 20, 2020

So much is “not normal” right now. Our beautiful new museum is full of fun exhibits that no one can see.
Our archives and library are bursting with information, but no one can do research. The chairs in our
auditorium are empty. The Soda Shop is quiet.

But the Museum staff is working hard from home to keep our local history alive. Our Collections &
Programs Coordinator, Suzy Quick, was especially excited about an idea to make a local history lesson
plan available to kids that are out of school and learning from home. She knows first-hand the
challenges of being a parent working from home combined with teaching and entertaining her young
daughter.

Drawing from the Vigo County Historical Society’s History Living program, Quick created a lesson plan
that teaches about the origins of Terre Haute and Vigo County through the River, the Road, and the
Rails. “Using the History Living program as the basis of the lesson plan made sense to me. It had been
successfully used in the Vigo County schools for many years and it was awarded the Dorothy Riker
Award for Innovation in the Field of History by the Indiana Historical Society in 2004,” said Quick.
We hope students will be excited to learn more about the people, places, and events that led to the
settlement and growth of our community. As young citizens of Terre Haute and Vigo County, it will one
day be up to them to take on the future of our fine city. We believe the more they know about this
community, the more they can take pride in where they live.

The lesson plan can be found on the Vigo County Historical Society & Museum’s website,
www.vchsmuseum.org and a link can be found on our Facebook page. The Vigo County School
Corporation will be sending an email to the elementary teachers and principals to let them know about
this new learning tool and to get it in the hands of their students.
