Permanent Closure of 8th Street Projected for Coming Week as Convention Center Construction Continues

As the coming Terre Haute Convention Center continues to develop in downtown Terre Haute, downtown 8thStreet will be permanently closed between Wabash Avenue and Cherry Street beginning Monday, September 14. Citizens are encouraged to be mindful of alternative routes and parking as it relates to this closure.

Garmong Construction Services, the project’s construction manager, has broken ground, ensuring that the project’s construction remains on track. With the closing of 8th Street, contractors will begin moving into the second phase of construction on the convention center and adjacent parking garage.

“As the conventions center’s construction continues to progress, 8th Street’s closure is simply another tangible means that showcases the milestones completed and the exciting future of this project and facility,” states Jon Marvel, CIB President.

Over the couple of months, Garmong has completed convention center work on the Hilton Garden Inn’s parking lot site including stormwater chambers, surface improvements, and returning the hotel’s parking lot to its original configuration. In addition, electrical infrastructure and utility relocations have also been completed.

The convention center is projected to open in April 2022 with construction continuing through 2020 and 2021.
