CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center Awarded Operating Support Funds
Grant provided by Indiana Humanities with funds from the American Rescue Plan

Terre Haute (October 22, 2021) – CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center has been awarded an Operating Support Grant of $20,000 from Indiana Humanities with funds from the American Rescue Plan. The grant provides funding relief to humanities organizations adversely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

CANDLES is one of 59 organizations across the state to receive operating support funds. Over $800,000 in funding, which was administered by Indiana Humanities via Operating Support and Programming/Capacity Building Grants, was provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), with funds from the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act of 2021. Last year, Indiana Humanities provided more than $500,000 in similar grants to humanities organizations as part of CARES Act funding.

Troy Fears, executive director of CANDLES, said “During the past 18 months, we have had limited engagement opportunities with our constituents, and this grant allows us to reengage with those we serve. As we all continue navigating these challenging times, sharing our message of hope, healing, respect and responsibility is more important than ever.”

About CANDLES
In 1995, Eva Mozes Kor opened the CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Terre Haute, with a mission to prevent prejudice and hatred through education about the Holocaust. Thousands of people, including many school groups, have visited CANDLES since it opened. In 2003, the museum was destroyed by a hate-filled arsonist. Eva vowed to rebuild, and with the help of a generous public outpouring of support, the museum was rebuilt and reopened in 2005. CANDLES is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
