Nearly 200 students attended ‘Go Ivy Day’ Ivy Tech college and career exploration event

TERRE HAUTE – Ivy Tech Community College Terre Haute hosted nearly 200 high school students at Go Ivy Day on Friday, Oct. 29 to explore college and career paths. Students toured Ivy Tech campuses, met faculty in academic programs they were interested in, and learned about scholarships, transfer information, and more.

Coltin Higley, senior at West Vigo High School, attended Go Ivy Day and he plans to attend Ivy Tech after graduation. Higley plans to study engineering technology before transferring to Rose-Hulman or Indiana State University.

“Today’s event gave me the opportunity to speak to instructors and other currently enrolled students, which helped to make expectations clear. I was given a list of every course I would be required to take for a two-year degree so I know what to expect coming in,” said Higley.

Higley, like many Wabash Valley high school students, has a head start on college because he took free dual credit classes in high school.

“Taking Ivy Tech classes early will help me make a smooth transition from high school to college,” said Higley. “It also helped to ease some of the anxiety over college because I know what to expect.”

As part of Go Ivy Day, students also heard from a student panel and had the opportunity to ask questions.

“The student panel gave us the chance to see how college would be and to understand exactly what Ivy Tech represents,” said Alison Nicholas, junior at Parke Heritage High School. “It made me realize that Ivy Tech is a college that I would be able to have a lot of help. It is a college that is very open, and students are able to get the help that they need.”

Nicholas plans to study paramedic science at Ivy Tech.

Robert Smiley, Ivy Tech student government association president, served on the student panel and answered a question on what made his experience at Ivy Tech unique.

“My success team at Ivy Tech has done so much for me. The tutoring center and other resources have helped me continue in my educational endeavors. The staff and faculty are truly there for you and I think everyone should consider that when considering a college,” said Smiley.

Ivy Tech Terre Haute offers many upcoming college visit dates, and individuals can sign up at ivytech.edu/visitus. Ivy Tech spring classes start January 19, 2022 and applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.
