Vote Yes for Vigo County Schools Campaign Launches to Promote May 3 Referendum

On May 3, 2022, Vigo County voters will have the opportunity to vote “yes” for a project that will impact the course of the community’s future. Voting “yes” will allow a comprehensive capital improvement project to renovate and rebuild the three Vigo County High Schools and devote other funds to infrastructure and maintenance at Vigo County middle and elementary schools. With this, Vote Yes for Vigo County Schools, a campaign established by the Vote Yes for Vigo County Schools Political Action Committee (PAC), is established to share the positive messaging of the campaign and project and what a “yes” vote means for the community as a whole.

“One of the most important decisions we, as voters, can make is voting ‘yes’ for Vigo County Schools on May 3,” stated Lori Danielson, Chair of the Vote Yes for VCS PAC. “No matter the past, no matter the present, this is our opportunity to take ownership of our future.”

Vote Yes for Vigo County Schools is dedicated to sharing the big picture meaning of what a project like this means to citizens, business owners, and students with four central pillars.

  • The future is community.
  • The future is family.
  • The future is opportunity.
  • The future is up to us.

These pillars are established to tell the narrative of how a thriving and successful school system supports many aspects of a community, its economy and its future.

The campaign will also help voters clarify the meaning of the question that will be presented on the ballot and what it means to each citizen, individually. Voters are encouraged to calculate their own tax impacts to see what a property tax increase means to them annually and monthly. The question on the ballot states an average increase of 55.55% of the portion of current school corporation taxes for residential properties. It’s important for voters to understand that this is not stating an increase of 55.55% in total. For example, the median home value in Vigo County is $97,500. For a $97,500 market value home, your monthly tax impact would be $6.64, or $79.68 a year.

“We are encouraging everyone to find out what this means for you,” Danielson said. “This is a small investment for a thriving future.”
