Vigo County Absentee Voters are Encouraged to Cast Mail in Ballots Early

As COVID-19 designated the new “normal,” the Vigo County Clerk’s Office has ensured that all protocols respect voter safety and that the voting process is protected and eligible voters’ right to vote remains. This year, 8,336 Vigo County residents have requested absentee ballots in order to vote via mail.

All absentee ballots must be received by the Absentee Voting Office by noon on June 2; however, voters are encouraged to submit their ballots early to avoid any delays in postage. Ballots that are not in office by noon on June 2 will not be eligible to be counted in the election. Absentee ballots can also be dropped off at Courthouse Security by noon on June 2.

“Absentee voting is beneficial for so many reasons. It allows people to vote from the comfort of their home; it provides a level of safety; and it encourages people to still vote,” states Vigo County Clerk Brad Newman. “Absentee voting is established as an added means for citizens to cast their votes. It is of utmost importance for those who applied for absentee ballots to submit their votes in a timely fashion. Postal delays have become common in today’s environment, and we want every eligible Vigo County absentee voter to take advantage of this opportunity.”

Additionally, per a resolution passed on May 5, the Vigo County Election Board reserves the right to recess on Election Day to stop the tabulation at 10:30 p.m. if 75% of the ballots cast have not been tabulated. The board will then resume ballot tabulation at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3.

“Ballot tabulation requires 100% perfection and accuracy,” states Newman. “This amendment allows our team to take the time needed to precisely calculate all ballots. With the large amount of mail in ballots due to COVID-19, it will likely take additional time to tabulate all ballots. We thank all voters for their patience and participation in this election, and we extend our thanks for all those who are working to make this election happen safely and correctly.”

Please Note: Due to COVID-19 and restrictions in place by the State of Indiana, results will not be streamed on the second floor of the Vigo County Courthouse on June 2, 2020, Primary Election night.
