(Terre Haute, IN) The Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce today announced the continuation of funding for a major community wellness program, the Pomeroy Wellness Program: A Heart Healthy Model for Better Health in the Wabash Valley. The grant is funded by the Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) will spearhead the program which will bring $100,000 to provide a comprehensive wellness pilot program focusing on healthy lifestyle that improves coronary health in residents of western Vigo County.
The focus will continue to be awareness and education and improving the cardiac health of participants through healthy lifestyles. The goal is to create a culture of wellness that enables participants to continue to manage their own health throughout their lives. Programs target nutrition and exercise, financial health, stress reduction, improved mental health, chronic disease management, safety education, and other topics. Key programs will use bio-metrics to measure success, as well as qualitative data.
While the primary focus of the Pomeroy Wellness Program has been western Vigo County, the second phase of the grant will explore ways to broaden the scope to serve the entire County toward a more regional wellness initiative. Other community partners participating in the second year of the grant include:
- The Maple Center for Integrative Health
- Union Hospital
- Terre Haute Children’s Museum
- Vigo County YMCA
- Vigo County School Corporation
- Hamilton Center
- Terre Haute Regional Hospital
- Ivy Tech Community College
This program will operate under the Chamber’s Better Health Wabash Valley initiative which has been charged with identifying the health needs that are most pressing in the Wabash Valley and helping to identify and develop programing to improve the overall health of the community.
The second phase of the Pomeroy Wellness Program began on January 1, 2016 and will continue through the end of the year.
