Eli Storey Caddies His Way to the Coveted Evans Scholarship

(Terre Haute, IN) – After being named a state finalist earlier last month and completing an interview with the Evans Scholar Board of Directors and Selection Committee on January 28th , Terre Haute South Senior Eli Storey has been awarded the Evans Scholarship through the Evans Scholars Foundation. Valued at nearly $120,000 for Indiana scholars, this 4-year scholarship provides full college tuition and housing at either Indiana University in Bloomington or Purdue University in West Lafayette.

“Being named an Evans Scholar and receiving this scholarship is life-changing and a dream come true,” said Storey, a golf caddie at the Country Club of Terre Haute for the past five years. “It feels great to know that all of my hard work on the golf course, in the classroom, and in the community has paid off!” Supported by a caddie program managed by the Country Club of Terre Haute, the Evans Scholars Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 1930 to provide college tuition and housing scholarships to caddies who demonstrate high character, high scholastic achievement, and financial need.

Steve Cass, local resident and a 1977 Evans Scholar IU graduate, was instrumental in bringing back the Evans Scholar caddie program in 2015 when he returned to Terre Haute. “The club membership has shown incredible mentoring and financial support since bringing back the caddie program,” Cass explained. “I couldn’t be happier for Eli who is more than deserving to receive the Evans Scholarship.”

Storey is one of sixteen Indiana students, nine female and seven male caddies, awarded the Evans Scholarship in 2021, the highest number of scholars awarded in Indiana in any single year. Scholarship funds come primarily from contributions by over 32,000 golfers across the country and is supported by over 60 members of the Country Club of Terre Haute.

The caddie program at the Country Club of Terre Haute is seeking young men and women ages 14 and over for the 2021 summer caddie program.
