The History Behind Vigo County Cemeteries

March 11, 2023 @ 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

In 1999, Indiana passed a number of cemetery laws. The Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources was authorized to create and maintain a registry of all burial grounds and cemeteries in the state. Volunteers were to be sought in each county to help locate the over 100,000 burial grounds in the state. After hearing of this project at a genealogy conference in 2001, the extended Ligget family volunteered for Vigo County. Sam and Jo Ligget have surveyed over 125 Vigo County cemeteries since January 2002. Their presentation will explain the criteria for this project and relate many of the interesting things they have learned from cemetery visits.
Sam and Jo Ligget are retired math teachers who share a love of history. They are members of the Wabash Valley Genealogy Society, the Indiana Historical Society, and the Canal Society of Indiana. Both taught 3 years in the Indianapolis area before returning to Sam’s home of Vigo County to continue their teaching careers. Sam taught at Honey Creek Junior High School, South Vigo High School, and Ivy Tech during a 40-year teaching career. Jo taught mainly at South Vigo High School. They have 2 children and 4 grandchildren who also reside in Vigo County.
Program admission free to VCHC and OLLI members, $7 for Adults and $6 for Seniors.
