Team Vigo Leadership Conference Kicks Off Monday
Three-day conference for high school students will focus on community service projects
TERRE HAUTE, IN—100 Vigo County high school students will participate in the Team Vigo Leadership Conference starting Monday, July 26, a three-day conference focused on leadership development and community service. The conference will be held at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and is co-hosted by the Vigo County School Corporation and the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce.
Students who were identified as current or emerging leaders will connect with over 20 local leaders in breakout sessions, hear keynote speeches from each of Vigo County’s four college presidents, and develop plans for school-wide service initiatives aimed at producing 50,000 hours of community service in the 2021-22 school year. Each high school’s team will present their initial school-wide community service plans at a banquet on Wednesday, July 28 at the West Vigo High School Green Dome, with a welcome from Mayor Duke Bennett and a keynote speech delivered by Indiana State University Men’s Basketball Coach Josh Schertz.
“The energy and talent of our community’s young people is one of Vigo County’s greatest strengths,” said Dr. Rob Haworth, superintendent of the Vigo County School Corporation. “This conference will connect our high school student leaders with our community’s most talented leaders, give our students new tools to lead their peers, and kick off a year of community service in our high schools.”
“The Team Vigo Leadership Conference aligns with the talent attraction and retention goals of the Chamber and the See You In Terre Haute Community Plan,” said Chamber President Kristin Craig. “We’re working to build a stronger community and that starts with the people. We’re hoping that the takeaway for students is the potential they have and the potential our community has as well.”
