New Member Welcome: Feminine Mystique

The Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce would like to welcome New Member, Feminine Mystique.

Owner Bonnie Bolinger is guest blogging to highlight her new business.

I have just started a new business called Feminine Mystique, located at 825 S. 7th Street in Terre Haute, which is also my home.  We specialize in Victorian era gifts and collectibles, and where better to locate than a Victorian home built in 1894?

The idea for the business came to me in late 2014.  Evidently, I had been dreaming (literally) about opening a business and when I awoke that autumn morning, I was very sure of the concept.  The name of the business came to me the same day.  Betty Friedan first spoke of the feminine mystique in her 1963 book of the same name.  She said that it was a problem that had no name – the belief that “fulfillment as a woman had only one definition for American women after 1949 — the housewife-mother.”  My thought is that modern day women are now expected to be super women – running the household, taking care of the children, and having a successful career as well.  We need some time to relax and just be girly girls!  Feminine Mystique, the business, offers a place to do just that.

We have two full rooms of beautiful merchandise:  dolls, figurines, vintage clothing, accessories, and jewelry, glassware, silverware, framed pictures and lots of lace and doilies.   There is a sitting room where women can rest, relax, and chat with friends (or make new ones).  We have coloring books Victoria magazine, books on the Victorian period, and informational pieces on the house, previous owners, and Terre Haute in general available in this room.

Come in and see this new addition to the 7th Street corridor!

Our operating hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 – 6:00 and Sundays from 12:00 – 6:00.

We look forward to your patronage!
