PUBLIC POLICY DIVISION

Division Goal: Represent the interests of our members and business at all levels of government by partnering with public officials to develop and implement sensible public policy that improves the economic vitality, business climate and quality of life in our community.

Division Vice Chair: Scott Jaeger, Thompson's Honda & Motorsports & Toyota Staff Member: Lisa Long, Director of Public Policy

Introduction: Public policy influences business success, workforce development, economic growth and quality of life.  For this reason, the Chamber continues to serve as the leading public policy advocate for the business community at all levels of government.

Guiding Principals: The Chamber’s Board of Directors adopted the following Guiding Principals to sharpen the organization’s public policy efforts on critical issues that: 1) help maximize return on investment for businesses, 2) create competitive advantages, and 3) promote community development and growth.

We believe in . . . Transportation initiatives, projects and programs that support economic growth through the safe and efficient movement of products, goods, services and people.  (Transportation Committee Chairperson: Jim Burdick, Wabash Valley Asphalt, Co. LLC)

We believe in . . . Local, state and Federal public finance and regulatory tax issues that have a positive fiscal impact on economic growth opportunities and business operations.  (Tax & Finance Committee Chairperson: Scott Jaeger, Thompson's Honda, Motorsports & Toyota of Terre Haute)

We believe in . . . Development, promotion, implementation and maintenance of initiatives and programs that support national security and enhance the positive role that the military community and defense industry have on the community.  (Military Affairs Committee: Mike Mitchell, Sony DADC)

We believe in . . . Engaging in and promoting initiatives and partnerships that support a business friendly environment free of obstacles to jobs growth and development.  (Business Advocacy Committee)

We believe in . . . Developing recreational, educational, commercial and residential opportunities along the Wabash River. We believe in . . . Spearheading and promoting K-12, secondary and post-secondary educational initiatives that help sustain continuous development of a highly skilled workforce.  (Workforce Committee Chairperson: Becky Buse, Covered Bridge Girl Scout Council)

We believe in . . . Socially responsible environmental regulations and initiatives that support community and business growth.  (Environmental Affairs Committee Chairperson: Dave Rader, Pfizer)

The Board also granted the Public Policy Council the authority to establish positions and to act on legislative issues that are consistent with these Guiding Principals. If an issue arises that falls outside the guidelines adopted, the Chamber’s Executive Committee and Board of Directors provides direction on the issue to the Public Policy Council.

Public Policy Council: One of the Chamber's farthest-reaching initiatives, the public policy council includes a committee structure that meets regularly to review and act upon legislative proposals and initiatives, plan and conduct the Washington Direct Contact and Washington DC "Fly-In" meetings, organize and coordinate Wabash Valley Day at the State Capitol, plan and host the Local Elected officials reception, participate in the Indiana Chamber's Legislative Reception and plan, organize and conduct meetings with government officials as determined necessary. (Chairperson: Greg Goode, Indiana State University)

Legislative Action Network: A subscription service, available to all Chamber members, providing up to date information on legislative activity from City Hall to the Nation's Capitol.  (Chairperson: Archie Kappel; Staff: Ron Hinsenkamp)
