Name: Danielle Isbell
Business and Job title: Resource Development Director
Why did you volunteer for the Workforce Development Mentoring program? I understand the importance of volunteering in our community and giving back in anyway possible. I amalso very aware that we are in a time where mentors are needed more than ever. This is especially true at the middle school age where it is critical that these students see a positive role model and have someone to help guide them into an area of career interest.
Why is this program rewarding to you? One of the best things about mentoring is watching the growth of my student and watching her navigate her school life with better decision making and increased confidence. I enjoy the look on her face when she realizes she has made an accomplishment all on her own. But more than that I I feel good knowing that by a simple 1 hour a week session I have potentially made one life better by simply showing her that someone outside of family cares and wants her to succeed.
Why do you think this has been rewarding to your mentee? I believe that this program is planting seeds that will take root and grow over time. I know that this program is in its early stages of creation but I know one thing for sure, this program will impact the lives of the mentee’s one session at time. It is so important that these children know and understand that while they still have a full life to live, the decisions that they make now could impact them for years to come. Helping guide them on the correct path and showing that they have the ability and confidence to make their own positive decisions is a perfect outcome.
What would you say/encourage another business professional thinking of volunteering? Take that next step, you wont regret it! It will be so rewarding for you personally and professionally. You will learn new things about yourself along the way that will enrich your life. Your community needs you, we can only make positive changes in the Wabash Valley through volunteering in action.
